    At Influence we love learning, not just to expand our knowledge and keep abreast of technology and trends, but our learning brings us together as a team. We run regular peer to peer sessions over lunch in our office to share knowledge and inspire each other on subjects we enjoy. Yesterday Sorcha and Jake led a session on sustainability. The focus was to discuss what we as a practice are doing and asking for ideas of what else we can do in 2024, not just at work but at home too. Before the meeting we measured the team’s personal carbon production and made pledges on reducing it. This is part of our journey as a team to reduce and offset our carbon footprint throughout the year and ongoing. #sustainability #carbonreduction #teamwork

    Project spotlight today on Chesterfield Canal. As part of the £6.5m restoration and regeneration project of the canal, Influence is delivering landscape services, including detailed hard and soft landscape plans, as well as a comprehensive Landscape and Ecological Management Plan, alongside our ecologist. When works are complete, they will result in the reinstatement of a large section of the canal north of Staveley in Derbyshire back to working conditions, which will be great for the canal network and local community. #chesterfieldcanal #landscapearchitecture #ecology

Firstly, the famous High Line in New York – a once abandoned aerial railway now transformed into a landscaped walkway, and secondly, Northumberlandlia in Northumberland, which takes inspiration from the nearby Cheviot Hills.     It’s great to see the progress on a project of ours, Oakley School in Leamington Spa. Being built by our friends at Willmot Dixon, Oakley is an all through school and will comprise of a 34-place nursery, 420-place primary and a 900-place secondary. Procured through the Scape framework, the school will be ready for the 2024 academic year and will help meet the significant demand for school places in the area. A Chartered Pathway Supervisor for the Landscape Institute, Sara also mentors licentiate candidates.     Graduation Day! 🎓 Last year our MD @landscapecorner was selected to be part of the ’10,000 Small Businesses’ UK Programme, which is designed to provide high-quality, practical education and business support to small businesses and social enterprises across the county. On the programme, participants identify and execute the steps necessary to enable them to scale their businesses. The prestigious four-month course provided 100 hours of tuition which includes seven days of residential learning, as well as a unique networking and peer learning opportunity. Sara has thoroughly enjoyed this incredible opportunity and the benefits it will bring to Influence over the coming years are limitless. A haven for wildlife and a place of beauty for families to enjoy, when works complete in the summer this year, it will enable more people to access Kings Mill while being mindful of the habitats.     People of the property and construction industry - we need your help! 👷🏼‍♀️🙏🏼 Children with movement disorders or psychological challenges across the East Midlands are having to wait far too long to access vital specialist services that can help them live to their full potential. We are supporting @naomisgardencharity, a Lincs-based charity providing these services to families in the region. However, their current premises limit how many children they can support. The great news is that after much fundraising they have a new building to move into, but don’t have the money to fit it out for purpose. Influence is bringing together incredible partners to help and while we already have several kind and generous companies committed to supporting, we do need more.     Career Profile 🗣️ This month we hear from senior landscape architect, Lindsey Arkley. How did you get into landscape architecture? When I was at school, I always wanted to be an infant teacher but whilst looking into available courses at Nottingham Trent University, I saw one for garden design and it was at the time when Diarmuid Gavin was popular on TV doing some very interesting garden design! I enrolled on the course and loved it. My first job in the industry was a temporary position as a garden designer in Chesterfield to cover a lady on maternity leave... I was there for eight years! I have worked in the landscape industry for almost 20 years in various roles, including design, estimating and within a plant nursery. I started at Influence Landscape Planning & Design as a landscape designer in 2015, and while working, I was able to do my MA in Landscape Architecture part-time at Leeds Beckett University. I graduated in 2019 and I’ve not looked back. Why do you love working in this sector? Every project is different which keeps it interesting, I really enjoy the soft landscape side such as developing detailed planting plans. What advice do you have for those considering the career? Landscape architecture is very underestimated, there is a lot more to this industry than people think. Do your research and you will be surprised at the variation in the role.
