    At the end of last year, we launched Women in Construction Lincolnshire (WICL) with partners Jill McCarthy, Jenna Frudd, Nick Worboys and Helen Ritchie. A new concept for Lincolnshire with a focus on education and opportunity. We had a great launch event in December with lots of professioanals (both women and men) in attendance and following a productive planning meeting in January, we have lots of plans for 2024.     Learning and sustainability are two ongoing focusses for Influence and therefore we are pleased to share that design assistant, Sorcha McCay, is starting her Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainability and Environmental Management at the University of Derby this month. We had a chat with Sorcha to find out more. What inspired you to take this course? Sustainability and the environment have always been of interest, but it wasn’t until I started working at Influence that I realised sustainability is a lot more than your office recycling, there are policies and industry standards, which can get quite complex. What are you hoping you will take from the course? I’m hoping to be better equipped with the skills needed to improve the culture of sustainability within Influence, on an internal and external basis. Do you plan to implement your learnings into operations at Influence? Absolutely, one of the modules is ‘sustainable business management’ which addresses the corporate sustainability challenge facing organisations and the skills required to improve the culture and environmental performance of businesses, plus all modules address how to implement the knowledge learnt into practice. Are there any specific areas of sustainability and environmental management that are of particular interest to you? The Diploma includes ecology and conservation which particularly interests me.     Career Profile 🗣 This month we hear from landscape manager Issie Stratton. How did you get into Landscape Architecture? I’ve always loved being outdoors and had been working in horticulture for over a decade, specialising in managing heritage gardens, when I decided I wanted to expand my knowledge of the landscape sector. I was particularly interested in ecology, habitats and sustainable management. So I decided to take a career break and undertook a Masters in Landscape Management at Sheffield University, which led me to my role at Influence. Why do you love working in this sector? I’ve always had an affinity with landscape and I love that the work I do can benefit both the natural world as well as the people that enjoy it. All jobs are different and the opportunities to learn are endless, I constantly feel that my knowledge is expanding! What advice do you have for those considering the career? Go for it! Immerse yourself in all of the innovations that are being explored within the industry and definitely consider the landscape management elements of the career as that’s what keeps our green spaces thriving!     Many of you know Influence for our varied commercial schemes but we also work on incredible residential projects. Working alongside Jonathan Hendry Architects and Grace Machin, we are pleased to be the landscape partner on a project to bring to life an impressive private dwelling in the open countryside in Rutland. As a team, with our collective skills in architecture, landscape and planning, we have navigated this project which needed a bespoke approach. Having submitted an exceptional planning application, we have received planning permission for the build of this new exceptional home for our client. The requirement for this type of development is that the design ‘is truly outstanding, reflecting the highest standards in architecture, and would help to raise standards of design more generally in rural areas; and would significantly enhance its immediate setting, and be sensitive to the defining characteristics of the local area.’ Well done team. #landscapearchitecture #planningpermission #exceptionalhouse

    Wonderful to see our project Sandilands in the news last month. The BBC shared that the site has been granted planning permission to turn the former golf course on the Lincolnshire coast into a wildlife haven. Owned by the National Trust, when complete, Sandilands will feature open water and islands as well as reedbeds and ponds. There will also be grassland and sand dunes to encourage wildlife and migratory birds to settle, and a visitor hub, all due for completion in 2025. We are really proud to be working on this project . The trust said it expected work on adaptations to the land and an on-site visitor hub would be completed in 2025. #nationaltrust #landscapearchitecture #wildlife

    Whodunnit! 🕵️ We had an entertaining evening at the CAPs Murder Mystery event last week held at the beautiful Hemswell Court in Lincolnshire. A charity event raising money for the incredibly important Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, professionals from the construction and property industry were tasked with working out who committed the crime from pieces of evidence presented by professional actresses and actors. Thank you to our guest Matt Devins from Lovell Partnership who joined us on the evening and the CAPs duo David Ford and John Tansur for organising.     Heritage is a key area of our work and specialism and we are active on a number of important sites across the country. Close to home in Lincolnshire, we are working with the Heritage Lincolnshire team on public realm works at Skegness’ Tower Gardens, which is part of the Skegness Town Centre Transformation Project. We recently visited the site where works are underway, including the dredging of silt from the pond.
