    Career Profile 🗣️ This month we hear from senior landscape architect Maxine Millard. How did you get into Landscape Architecture? I was looking to change career in my early 30’s and did a foundation degree in Horticulture with Garden Design. I finished this but then stayed with my previous career as I was unsure about the advantages of changing careers at this stage in my life. In my 40’s, I then did the MA in Landscape Architecture and Influence was the first company I applied to! Why do you love working in this sector? It is a varied career, every project is different and utilises creative thinking and problem solving. I also work with other disciplines, and every day is a school day. You need to have an appetite for continual learning. What advice do you have for those considering the career? Do it – you won’t regret it. Lots of opportunities in this sector.     Last month our landscape manager Isabel attended the National Urban Design Conference in Sheffield. The two-day event reflected on the dramatic changes that have occurred over the last four years and how towns and cities need to be rethought and reimagined to meet the current challenges. Day one focussed on regeneration, streets, neighbourhoods and urban design awards. Day two looked at strategic planning and growth, reuse v demolition and rebuild, health and wellbeing centres.     Last month we had the fantastic opportunity to talk about landscape architecture being a progressive and interesting career for young people. Shona attended the Caistor Yarborough Academy Careers Discovery Day and met with students who were thinking about their future careers. As a company, we continue to invest in the younger generation, supporting both university and school students with work placements. We are passionate about sharing and championing the diverse career of being a landscape architect. This profession is for everyone and it is important to us that it is accessible to all.     We are starting with principle landscape architect, Kathryn Dunk. How did you get into Landscape Architecture? Working for many years as an Architect, I was becoming more and more interested in the juxtaposition of inside and outside space and how in the most successful designs placed equal emphasis on each. With the key elements of spatial design and place-making being fundamental to both architecture and landscape architecture I became keen to learn more about how planting design could influence the character of a space through the seasons. It really is a discipline in which you never stop learning. Why do you love working in this sector? There is concept design (perhaps my favourite part), then seeing the essence of the design reflected down in the technical details and choice of materials and planting. As the practise works nationally you get to see a lot of the country and it’s surprising how lovely some more overlooked parts of it can be. What advice do you have for those considering the career? Landscape architecture is becoming more and more important in our society as people grow more appreciative of the importance of well-designed outside space and its key links to the natural world and bio-diversity.     Ruth in our team has recently completed a sustainability course at Nottingham Trent University. The Sustainability and Inclusive Leadership course was to understand why social and environmental challenges are important for business and the connections between social and environmental solutions. During the course Ruth learnt about: • How different sectors, such as technology, manufacturing, fashion, textiles, food and drink, impact the climate and environment. • Calculating the carbon impact of personal and business practices. • Identifying solutions with the highest impact: in our personal lives and in our roles at work. • Understanding approaches and methods to reduce personal and business emissions. • Developed an action plan to support sustainability and inclusivity transformation. • Taught how to apply the concepts of sustainability, leadership, and the SDGs to our role at work and/or business. • Made aware of economic and business models that can encourage energy efficiency, waste management and eco-innovation in your business. • Developed a better understanding of your own personal values and ethical decision-making for responsible leadership.
