The project
West Yorkshire: Transforming Batley Town Centre into a Safer, More Accessible and Vibrant Destination Shaped by Its Community
Influence were appointed by Kirklees Council in late 2023 to deliver transformative improvements to Batley Town Centre through a £14m public realm regeneration project led through a phased, RIBA-aligned process with extensive community engagement.
The scheme has evolved through ongoing consultation since 2021, incorporating over 450 responses and broad stakeholder participation. Key challenges around traffic, accessibility and business impact have been addressed through transparent dialogue, targeted engagement and evidence-led design refinements.
Collaboration with residents, businesses and young people has strengthened inclusive placemaking and social value, informing design outcomes such as public spaces and art. The project demonstrates how continuous engagement, technical analysis and responsive design can successfully deliver safer, more accessible and vibrant town centre, with long-term benefits for the Batley community.
