Lincoln Medical School Building Get the Go Ahead

The official go-ahead has been given to build Lincolnshire’s first ever medical teaching facility at the University of Lincoln. It is set to be the most sustainable building on the Brayford campus and the first in Lincoln to include a green wall and a solar wall. Approval for the plans were unanimously agreed at a meeting of the City of Lincoln council’s planning committee at the end of March 2019.

It comes after the University of Lincoln and University of Nottingham were successful in a joint bid to establish a new medical school for Lincolnshire. Professor Andrew Hunter, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Lincoln said:

“This building represents not just the success of creating a new medical school, but also our commitment to the communities in Lincolnshire who have supported us… It is an exciting prospect to be training the medical professionals of the future who could have a direct impact on the health of the county and surrounding areas.”

The £21 million, five-storey development will sit opposite the Issac Newton Building and next to the Janet Lane-Claypon Building. Housing lecture theatres, laboratories, clinical and prosection anatomy suites and a dedicated science library, it will also feature clinical skills suites.

Influence were appointed to deliver RIBA Stage 3 design, in conjunction with HLM Architects as lead designers.  Influence were required to carefully assimilate a design that responds to the existing campus setting taking account of the requirements of maintaining the Delph Pond: a large flood alleviation pond situated adjacent to the site and at the centre of the campus.  In addition to designing the ground floor landscape plan, the new building will house a second floor roof terrace for the use of students and staff; the soft design is that of a modern physic garden reflecting the medicinal properties of plants throughout the ages.
